[Published at The Playlist] Truth is, most definitely, stranger than fiction. Such is the case in the upcoming documentary “Three Identical Strangers.”
Imagine if you met a long-lost twin you never knew you had. Now, imagine if the two of you then met a long-lost triplet. The odds of this happening are staggeringly low, yet it happened for David Kellman, Robert Shafran, and Eddy Galland. And it gets even stranger. Imagine further if the three of you then found out that you were separated at birth as part of a science experiment. Wouldn’t you want to know more? Tim Wardle’s Sundance Film Festival hit explores our three subjects’ journey to discover the truth.
The trailer for “Three Identical Strangers” opens with an image of endless amounts of people walking the streets of New York to give one the perspective of how vast the world really is, while Robert Shafran recounts the day he met Eddy Galland at college. Dawn Thompson‘s costume design transports us to the 1970s as the dramatizations provide a cinematic flare. David Kellman explains that a newspaper article prompted him to seek out the reunited duo.
The archival footage then shows the newly reformed triplets on talk shows, messing around in home videos, and still photographs of the three together. Then, we are introduced to our conflict. These triplets were separated at birth unbeknownst to their parents, but why? The mystery deepens, and the stage is set.
The documentary won the Special Jury Prize on behalf of its director Wardle (former head of development for BBC Documentaries). It is produced by Raw and co-distributed by CNN Films and Neon.
Those eager to unravel this mystery can see “Three Identical Strangers” on June 29, 2018.
