[Published at The Playlist] The “Star Trek” franchise has had a bit of a renaissance recently. “Star Trek: Discovery” is working on its second season, CBS is working on three new “Star Trek” shows, including one that may see the return of the iconic character Captain Jean-Luc Picard (famously played by Patrick Stewart), and Paramount Pictures is working on two new film projects: “Star Trek 4” and Quentin Tarantino‘s untitled mystery ‘Trek’ project. Fans have been speculating what Tarantino’s “Star Trek” film could be about since it was first announced. Now, cast member Zachary Quinto has weighed in on the theories, citing that Tarantino’s film may feature the JJ Abrams‘s “NuTrek” cast.
“Until deals are done and contracts are signed and schedules are cleared, nothing is set in stone, so anything can happen,” Quinto explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “My understanding is Quentin had this idea and they were shaping it and forming it and he is off to do his Manson movie. And it would be after that, that [the 2009 cast] would go maybe do one with him. Which is pretty exciting, pretty cool.”
“Jessica Jones” director S.J. Clarkson has signed on to helm the non-Tarantino “Star Trek 4,” based on a script by uncredited “Star Trek: Beyond” writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. The film is rumored to see Chris Hemsworth’s George Kirk (Capt. Kirk’s dad, who famously died in the opening minutes of Abram’s 2009 reboot) returning to the franchise alongside the NuTrek cast of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and John Cho.
Hypothetically, Tarantino’s film would be the fifth film in the NuTrek franchise. However, the project seems to be a long way in the future, as Tarantino is in the thick of pre-production for his Charles Manson film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
