[Published at The Playlist] Perhaps Scarlett Johansson was jealous of her ‘Avengers‘ co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo for working with director Taika Waititi on “Thor: Ragnarok.” Judging by everything we know about Waititi’s directing style, working with filmmaker has to be a blast. So, it makes sense to learn that Johansson is interested in partnering with Waititi on his next film.
According to a report from Variety, the actress is going to get her chance to work with the hilarious director on his upcoming film, “Jojo Rabbit.” The World War II-set film follows a young German boy, who discovers that his mother, played by Johansson, has been hiding a Jewish girl in their house. To help deal with this issue, the boy creates an imaginary friend, played by Waititi, who just happens to be Adolph Hitler. While that doesn’t necessarily sound like the typical Taika Waititi film, on paper, apparently the same whimsy and humor found in his films will be present in ‘Jojo,’ with his Hitler not being the villain known in history books.
“It’s my version of…a lonely boy’s best version of his hero,” Waititi told The Wrap, “which is really his dad…This is not the Adolf we know and hate, this guy is goofy, charming, and glides through life with a childlike naivety.”
“Jojo Rabbit” is a welcome departure for Johansson. The versatile actress started her career doing various genres of film but recently has stuck to more action and comedies, with many people thinking of her as Black Widow in the various Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
Waititi, who also wrote “Jojo Rabbit,” is also proving himself to be quite the multifaceted director. He made a career for himself writing and directing his own signature brand of comedy, but most recently, made the leap to big budget superhero films with his “Thor: Ragnarok.” That film proved that Waititi was able to translate his own style to blockbusters, as well. Waititi is currently filming his pilot for the “What We Do in the Shadows” television series that was picked up by FX, co-starring his original castmate, Jemaine Clement.
“Jojo Rabbit” doesn’t currently have a release date, but production is expected to begin this spring.
