[Published at The Playlist] Before “Deadpool” changed the game for R-rated superhero movies in 2016, Matthew Vaughn‘s adaption of Mark Millar‘s R-rated comic book “Kick-Ass” set the stage in 2010. It featured profanity, sex, drugs, excessive violence, and rock and roll. Perhaps the best part of “Kick-Ass,” however, was the young Chloe Grace Moretz‘s Hit-Girl, a trained assassin whose bite was far louder than her bark. And boy, the little pre-teen could bark, belting out profanity-laced one-liners while chopping villains to pieces. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike. Unfortunately, Jeff Wadlow‘s sequel, “Kick-Ass 2,” was a critical and financial failure, to say the least.
Earlier this month, Matthew Vaughn announced plans to reboot the “Kick-Ass” franchise. Alas, for fear of going even further in the wrong direction with a third film, Moretz has stated that she won’t be appearing in another sequel.
“I love the franchise. I think the first movie was really, really special.” Moretz explained at a panel discussion at the Provincetown Film Festival (via IndieWire). “I wish the second one had been handled in a little bit of a different way. Because I think we were all kind of looking forward to something a little different than what happened with it all.”
“As much as I love the character of Hit-Girl, I think she lives and survives in ‘Kick-Ass,’ and I kind of want to keep her there. I kinda wanna keep everyone’s mind in ‘Kick-Ass.’ So I don’t think there will be a ‘Kick-Ass 3,’ at least I don’t think with Hit-Girl in it,” she concluded.
This is a classic good news/bad news situation – the obvious bad news being that Moretz won’t be featured in a third film. Even though her Hit-Girl character was spun off into her own comic book series, which was very popular, it appears that Moretz wouldn’t even consider a spin-off, at all.
However, fans of the comic may be familiar with the character of Patience. Mark Millar himself is campaigning for none other than Tessa Thompson to play the new female version of Kick-Ass. If “Kick-Ass 3” ever makes it off of the drawing board, and if they find a new Hit-Girl, there just may be a hit in the works.
